Optimatoi

Theme in northwest Asia Minor (qq.v.) carved out of Opsikion (q.v.) in the eighth century, with its command center at Nikomedeia (q.v.). The soldiers of this theme supplied and looked after the pack animals that carried the baggage of imperial tagmata from Constantinople (qq.v.), when the latter went out on campaign.
